Why did you decide to get into hair and makeup?

I have always loved hair and makeup since I was a child. I was a stage performer, singing and dancing in shows and while the other girl’s mums where doing their child’s makeup I had already perfected my winged liner and red lip.

Tell us about your background?

I started my career as a singer and dancer so stage makeup is a huge passion of mine. When I stopped performing I began working for MAC Cosmetics and with their amazing training I was able to perfect my skills. I then moved onto counter management with Bobbi Brown and Urban Decay, before I decided to become a fully qualified freelance makeup artist. I also train in hair styling as well so that I could offer my clients both services. Now I love being able to do hair and makeup.

Do you prefer one over the other?

I have been doing makeup longer but enjoy both equally as I get an immense sense of satisfaction seeing the bride and bridal parties looking incredible on their special day.

Why do you specialise in bridal hair and makeup?

I have worked on many photo shoots and films sets but I always preferred bridal occasions. It is extremely personal and every wedding is totally unique.

Newlyweds looking chic and elegant.

Why did you move to Spain?

I had a great freelance business in the UK but desired more challenge and besides, who doesn’t love the sun?

What do you love about your job?

I feel extremely lucky to be able to say that I truly love my job. Being part of someone’s most important day is truly humbling. I get to share such wonderful moments with all my clients. When a bride has her hair and makeup completed, puts on her wedding dress and appears before her loved ones, the reactions are always touching. To know that you have helped your bride feel this beautiful is everything.

What inspires you?

Bringing out people’s inner beauty has always inspired me. Helping women feel as beautiful on the outside as they do on the inside is very important to me. I believe in using makeup and hair styling to help enhance our natural beauty not to try and mask it. ‘All woman are pretty without makeup – but with the right makeup can be pretty powerful’ – Bobbi Brown

Is it important to have a trial before the wedding?

I would say a trial is exceptionally important. This is the time for the bride to meet their artist and make sure they are happy with the look they have envisaged. So many times a bride has given me pictures of the styling they want but when they see it on themselves they feel it doesn’t suit them or they wanted something else. A trial gives us time to play around with different styles and ensures my clients feel confident that they will look and feel amazing on the actual day.

Why should a bride have a professional look after their beauty needs on the day?

Having a professional on the day takes away all the stress from the bride. It is so lovely for a bride to feel pampered and special. We all have bad hair or makeup days but with a dedicated professional you can be confident that everything will be taken care of. You will have that magical look that will last all day.

What tips do you have for keeping the hair and makeup in place all day in the Spanish heat?

Preparation and correctly chosen products are the key. How your skin and hair are prepped make a huge difference to how the look will last in the heat. You must make sure your skin is well hydrated before applying the makeup, focussing on the right products for your type. Since being in Spain I have tried many different products on myself and others ensuring they will survive the Spanish heat. Another tip; using waterproof products and setting your makeup with a powder and setting spray will also help you achieve that long lasting effect.

What makeup and hair products do you use?

In my kit you will find a real mix. Brands include Bobbi Brown, MAC, Urban Decay, NYX, Make Up For Ever,’L’Oreal, GHD, Kerastase among others.

What advice would you have for someone who never wears makeup but wants to on their wedding day?

Be true to yourself! If you never wear makeup I would steer clear of a heavy eye, winged liner and red lip as you probably won’t feel like you. Keep the makeup subtle to enhance your natural features. Using a professional artist on the day will also help to achieve the perfect look.

Favourite job to date?

Wow that is a really hard question and as cheesy as it sounds all my clients are a pleasure to work with. But I think I have to say my very first bride from my first wedding is closest to my heart. We built a great bond and are still in touch to this day.

What’s the strangest thing you have been asked to do on a wedding day?

Most of my work has gone incredibly smoothly… However, I once had my bride ask me to go to the groom’s room with my makeup’as she insisted she didn’t want him looking shinning and pale in the pictures ‘ After much protesting his better half had to be called and finally he allowed me to delicately apply some powder and bronzer.

Tell a funny bridal story which happened to you.

It was a wedding morning that was going really smoothly and I was just doing the final hair and makeup touch-ups. The hotel room had the kind of buzz it does when the bride is finally ready and everyone is getting ready to leave. One bridesmaid had come over to me who hadn’t’done her dress up yet. She said she had put on a few pounds since her dress fitting’but that she was sure the zip would do up and especially didn’t want to worry the bride ‘ I just had to help her ‘ So as she breathed in I very’carefully’zipped the dress up. To our delight, the zip did up no problem. The bride was the first to leave the room for a few pictures on the stairway with her photographer and the rest of the bridesmaids were about to leave the room. Then the bridesmaid that I had helped bent over to do up her shoe and… rip! The whole zip was broken and detached from the fabric. She looked at me in total horror. I ran down to the’reception’to see if they had a sewing kit, and’luckily’they did. I charged back to the room and ended up sewing the bridesmaid into her dress with only a few moments to spare. Since that day I always keep a mini sewing kit in my kit.

What is next for you?

Right now I am really enjoying living in Spain. I have a bridal agency in the UK where I send artists to jobs through my website (lucymua.com). My next step would be to build the same kind of agency here. Since I can remember it has also been a dream of mine to have my own collection of branded lashes and makeup brushes so watch out for exciting things to come in the future!
