Nicola has also been a health and beauty journalist for more than a decade.

Nicola worked as editor of Confetti, the wedding magazine.

Did you always want to work in makeup?

I always had a love for makeup and, during my teens, I was always the one called on to do my friends’ makeup before a big night out (blue eyeshadow and frosted pink lipstick anyone?) However, it didn’t occur to me to pursue a career as a makeup artist until much later in life. Once I hit my twenties I started to focus on writing and began working in journalism, specialising in health and beauty. This gave me a vast understanding of beauty treatments and products and I was lucky enough to be sent many samples over the years to review. I went on to become the editor of Confetti, the wedding magazine and I am now an encyclopedia of knowledge on the Coast’s wedding industry.

After spending years sitting in front of a computer I decided it was time for a change and made the decision to train professionally in make-up. I wasn’t exactly sure where it was going to take me but, much to my surprise, six months into the course I was already being booked for big jobs. I went on to study under double Emmy award-winning make-up artist Kevin James Bennet and took a course with Val Garland, one of the world’s leading fashion and beauty makeup artists. I am now blessed to say this is my full time job.

What do you like best about your job?

No day is the same. I could start the week in the desert area of Almeria shooting for a music video and the next day be bawling my eyes out when my bride’s father sees her for the first time. I love that I get to meet new people, visit different places and basically earn my living drawing on peoples faces!

What are your favourite products?

My kit is customised and I use a variety of different pro products and high-end brands. I carry hand picked products from the likes of Chanel, Nars, Dior, Make Up For Ever, YSL and Bobbi Brown. My pro brands include RCMA, PPI, Kryolan, Maq Pro and Viseart. Skin prep is key to me, 70 per cent of a good makeup is down to the skincare, so I invest heavily in good skincare products. I have a lot of clients who suffer from skin conditions such as eczema and psoriasis and find it very difficult to achieve the look they want with makeup. Having personal experience dealing with this I think has helped me be able to assist my clients with skin concerns. My goal is to create beautiful, long-lasting faces whatever the skin type.

In Part Two Nicola will share her top beauty tips for brides-to-be.
