Spotlight interview with Ged Kennedy, Mallorca-based certified wedding celebrant.
When planning your wedding, a lot of time and thought goes into choosing the right venue, the dress, the styling, the menu… However, it’s just as important to spend time thinking about the actual ceremony and, of course, the person that will be announcing you Husband and Wife!
Today, Sunshine Weddings Spain is fortunate to be able to have a chat with wedding celebrant Ged Kennedy about getting married in Mallorca and the importance of putting your heart into your vows.
I was born and brought up in Stoke on Trent, England and went to Birmingham University to study Languages and Sports Science. Other than the UK, I have lived and worked in a variety of countries including France, Switzerland, Tunisia, Venezuela and México. After 9 fabulous years in Cancún, my wife and I wanted to be nearer our daughters who were both in Europe, nearer parents who were getting no younger and our son had the opportunity to attend a full time, high-performance tennis academy. So in 2014 we moved from one beautiful place to another, Mallorca, which has been home ever since.
Cancún and Riviera Maya are very popular wedding destinations for North Americans, so that is where I first began the role of a celebrant. My “speciality” quickly became dual language ceremonies – English and Spanish. I was delighted to learn that Mallorca was also a really popular wedding destination and that there was a high demand, mainly from European couples, for dual language ceremonies. Hence, shortly after arriving, I teamed up with Annie at Ceremonies in Mallorca and have been a celebrant on the Island since then, both for weddings in English and in a combination of English and Spanish.
I love a bit of fun, some banter and I’m often joking around with friends and family – and this light and fun side definitely comes into my celebrant style. I find that this approach often tends to keep couples relaxed; indeed, many of them thank me for helping them to keep calm and not to panic! However, wedding ceremonies are not all about fun, but about a mixture of emotions, and I love to get people laughing and crying for all the right reasons!
Absolutely! The vows are such an important part of the ceremony and I think it is so important that the couple are really happy with the vows they choose. Sometimes they choose a “standard set” (there are many to choose from), or they adapt them or write their own – which we often do together until they are perfect for the couple! This is even more important when they are then spoken in two languages!
Mallorca is such a beautiful place to get married – there are so many stunning settings to suit all tastes and party sizes. And the wedding planners are so creative and make these fabulous locations even more breathtaking! Added to that, the climate is perfect for outdoor weddings and the island is so well connected that it is easy for family and guests to fly in and out as suits them.
For me every single wedding is unique and I genuinely enjoy them all. However, some are definitely funnier than others and the personal stories of how the couples met or got engaged are often hilarious! Once a groom produced two Haribo Friendship rings instead of the traditional wedding rings and on another occasion, instead of saying “to stand beside you always” a bride said “to stand behind you always” to everyone’s amusement. Sometimes the “off script” things that happen make the weddings truly personal and memorable – so I really try to avoid too much formality!
After many years living and working in Mexico, Ged settled in Mallorca with his family in 2014. He has enjoyed a 25 year career in the travel industry whilst also working as a wedding celebrant. Ged enjoys meeting the bride and groom and working with them to prepare their perfect ceremony; personalised and meaningful. His style is to ensure that the event is all about the happy couple – and to facilitate and to ensure that the words that they have chosen have maximum impact and emotion.
Ged is a British National and Spanish Resident and experienced in leading Wedding Ceremonies in English and in a combination of English and Spanish.
