Today Sunshine Weddings Spain is chatting all things hair with the lovely Karen Bennett, bridal hair specialist in Mallorca.
Hello Karen, welcome and thank you for being today’s feature guest. Tell us a little bit more about yourself, have you always had an interest in hair and styling, what sparked that passion?
I started from a young age doing my own hair practising plaits etc. Then I started to do my friends hair styling and sometimes cutting with no clue!! It’s always been an interest of mine that’s grown into passion.
Which industry gurus do you look up to?
I’m always in ore of people like Angelo Seminara and Trevor Sorbe for their avontguard. I follow many people on Instagram, but one of my favourite at the moment is Frank Apostolopoulos as he does great photographic work.
Where did you train?
I originally trained with a small company in the North East of England called Contemporary, back then it consisted of five salons. They have great training and were always looking to get you to be the best you could be. I loved working there. I also trained with Toni and Guy where I moved to London and worked in Covent garden.
How long have you been living and working in Mallorca, and how long specifically for the wedding industry?
We moved to Mallorca 18 months ago, the island is amazing. I started working for a salon pretty much as soon as we got here. I have been doing wedding hair all through my career and in 2010 I took a job in ibiza working along side a makeup artist for weddings which was my dream job. After a couple of years, I took a break to have my children and I’ve been back full time since moving to Mallorca.
What bridal hair trends do you predict for 2020?
Bridal hair for 2020. I think the low textured bun is going to be a popular one and the people that want it down will be going for a mixture between the Boho and glam curl with half up – maybe in a ponytail.
What’s your favourite bridal style for hair, and bridesmaids’ hair?
My favourite at the minute is the low textured bun as it keeps everything tidy, looking elegant yet modern.
Most challenging bridal style you have ever undertaken?
Most challenging bridal style hmmmmm nothing springs to mind apart from working with extensions, which can sometimes be more time consuming or someone with loads of thick hair.
How do you deal with working in the extreme heat of the summer?
If it’s hot, I drink loads of water and carry a hand fan!… Most people have air conditioning so that helps.
Would you recommend that brides book to have a ‘dress’ rehearsal with you before their big day, even if they live overseas? How quickly do you tend to get booked up?
100% I’d advise to have a hair trial as it’s great to get to know the hair and chat about styles. It takes away the worry for the bride on the wedding day knowing you’ve already picked your hair style. Hair and makeup is just as important as the dress as it all comes together to create the look.
I’m already getting enquiries for 2021 as people normally start talking about organising their hair six months to a year before. But don’t get me wrong, there’s still people who get in touch a few months before.
