Thank you for taking time out of your busy schedule to chat with us today, Jose Maria, tell us a bit more about you and your company ASYSA.

ASYSA was created in 2010 with the aim of managing a lifeguard service for all types of facilities. I had previously worked for several years as a lifeguard supervisor and decided to use that experience to set up my own company, but apart from just offering a lifeguard service, I wanted to go a step further and also provide quality training for professionals who want to work as a lifeguard.

We also provide recertification classes, designed to update lifeguarding skills and lifeguarding certification—usually only valid for 2 years—as well as keep our staff up-to-date with the constant changes in regulations and protocols in our field.

That way, ASYSA controls the quality of service through the supervision and training of our lifeguards from the very beginning. In fact, 90% of our lifeguards have come through our system.

We also generate a series of tools so that all our students and employees can keep in touch with us and keep up-to-date with all the news that affect us in our profession.

Does your company provide services to water parks on the Costa del Sol? Which ones?

We initially started working in private urbanisations and little by little we expanded our services to larger facilities such as hotels, urbanisations and of course water parks.

For the last 10 years we have been managing the lifeguard service at Bahia Park where we have a staff of more than 40 lifeguards.

Are you able to provide your services to private parties / weddings for a day? In your opinion is it advisable?

Our company provides lifeguard services for private parties, or for any type of event. Whenever there are children playing in the water, or near a swimming pool, it is highly recommended that they have exclusive surveillance to ensure their safety at all times.

Do you also provide services for a week at a private villa?

We can provide a lifeguard service for any period of time that our clients require, adapting to their needs and advising them on any necessary measures that we consider appropriate in terms of safety.

With over a decade of lifeguarding experience, I’m sure you’ve aided many people in dire straits, is there any particular rescue that stands out?

The role of lifeguard is very demanding due to the responsibility it entails and the weather conditions we endure—usually extremely hot—but it is very comforting when you know that you are helping people and they thank you for it.

Once, when I was working in the children’s area of a water park, a little girl, about 3 years old, fell off one of the slides and into the water, she accidently swallowed some water and started choking. I quickly picked her up and aided her and once she recovered she turned to me and said: “My hero”.
