Sunshine weddings Spain bridal story in Vélez-Málaga

Back

Welcome to another Sunshine Weddings Spain bridal story, where we share a closer look at the different ways couples choose to celebrate their wedding day across southern Spain and Mallorca.

Today’s feature offers a glimpse into what a traditional church ceremony can look like, followed by a countryside reception at a classic Spanish cortijo — combining two distinct venues into one magical celebration. With carefully coordinated transportation and thoughtful timing throughout, guests moved effortlessly from the ceremony setting in Vélez-Málaga to the reception venue in the surrounding hills, experiencing both the formality of a religious service and the relaxed elegance of an Andalusian estate.

Clarisa and Salvador were married on 22nd September 2025, beginning their day in a historic church in Vélez-Málaga, followed by countryside celebrations at a restored Andalusian cortijo nestled among olive groves and sun-drenched hills.

For couples newly engaged and dreaming of a wedding abroad, Spain offers endless possibilities — from timeless churches full of history and character, to stunning cortijos with terraces, gardens, and sweeping views perfect for sunset photos. Whether you’re imagining a day steeped in tradition, a relaxed al fresco reception, or a blend of both, a Spanish destination wedding provides the backdrop for a celebration that is as unique and memorable as your love story. Read on to get a closer feel for a classic church ceremony followed by a cortijo reception, as we reflect back on Clarisa and Salvador’s beautiful wedding last September.

Bridal Morning Preparations — A Cortijo Wedding Week

One of the great advantages Clarisa and Salvador enjoyed by choosing the traditional Andalusian cortijo featured in today’s bridal story was that the venue also operates as a boutique hotel. This meant they weren’t simply arriving for a single day of celebrations — they could use the estate as their base for the entire wedding week.

Set in the countryside near Vélez-Málaga, the cortijo provided accommodation for the couple and close family, allowing everyone to settle in ahead of the big day. Waking up on-site meant no early transfers, no time pressure, and a calm, organised start to the morning. The couple shared breakfast together at the hotel before separating to begin preparations — a relaxed and meaningful way to begin their wedding day.

Hair and makeup began in one of the cortijo’s bright guest rooms, with large windows overlooking the gardens and surrounding hills. The boutique layout of the property meant everything was close by — suppliers could move easily between rooms, and the photographer, Agata Jensen, was able to capture natural preparation moments without disruption.

The florist delivered Clarisa’s bouquet and the maid of honour’s flowers directly to the hotel, where they were photographed and kept safely aside. By mid-afternoon, Clarisa was fully dressed and ready for final portraits within the grounds — taking advantage of the cortijo’s whitewashed walls, traditional wooden doors, and garden pathways as backdrops.

With the couple and key guests staying on-site, and all logistics coordinated by the Sunshine Weddings Spain team, the morning flowed smoothly — demonstrating how a cortijo that doubles as a boutique hotel can make the entire wedding experience more relaxed and cohesive from start to finish.

Ceremony at a Traditional Church in Vélez-Málaga

Set in the heart of Vélez-Málaga, Clarisa and Salvador’s ceremony took place within a striking white church defined by soaring arched ceilings and a luminous, classical interior. The altar was framed by an impressive circular mural of Jesus, arms outstretched, surrounded by disciples — a powerful focal point that drew every eye forward. Beneath it stood a white, dome-like tabernacle and a simple white cross, creating a setting that felt both grand and reverent.

The black-and-white chequered aisle led toward the altar, where red kneeling stools had been placed for the couple — a subtle yet traditional detail reflecting the Catholic Mass format of the ceremony. Guests arrived to the soft strains of instrumental music, taking their seats as final preparations unfolded. The bridal party and family made their way in, culminating in Clarisa’s entrance alongside her father to an instrumental version of “Here Comes the Bride,” echoing beautifully beneath the vaulted ceiling. Clarisa looked radiant in a thin-strap gown with detailed floral embroidery, a fitted bodice flowing into an elegant skirt with a train, complemented by a lace veil attached to her dark hair styled in a sophisticated bun. Salvador wore a classic black suit with a crisp white shirt, white tie, and black bowtie, perfectly complementing the timeless elegance of the ceremony.

The ceremony, conducted in Spanish, followed a full Catholic Mass with religious and classical instrumental accompaniment during key moments — the signing, communion, and recessional. Bathed in natural light that reflected off the white walls and columns, the atmosphere felt timeless and deeply meaningful. The mural behind the altar provided a striking backdrop as Clarisa and Salvador exchanged vows and rings beneath the outstretched figure of Christ.

After the service, guests lined the aisle to congratulate the newlyweds before the couple paused for formal family photographs. Guests were then gently guided toward the waiting coach for the journey to the cortijo reception, while Clarisa and Salvador stayed a few moments longer inside the church to complete final portraits, capturing the elegance of the architectural setting before departing to begin their celebration.

Drinks Reception at a Spanish Cortijo

Guests arrived at the cortijo reception ahead of the couple, traveling by coach and taking in the charming surroundings as anticipation for the evening grew. Clarisa and Salvador followed shortly after, arriving to a warm welcome and taking a quiet moment for intimate portraits among the cortijo’s sunlit terraces and olive groves.

As the drinks reception began in the amphitheatre area, guests were welcomed with a selection of white and red wines, beer, and soft drinks. Cold and hot canapés were passed around, offering a taste of local flavours while Pablo provided a gentle musical backdrop, filling the terrace with soft, melodic tunes.

Clarisa and Salvador soon joined their guests, greeting friends and family while sharing laughter and toasts under the warm evening sky. The atmosphere shifted as the Mariachi band arrived, bringing a burst of colour, energy, and cultural celebration to the cortijo. Their lively melodies intertwined with the joyful chatter of the gathering, perfectly complementing the relaxed, festive ambience of the reception.

As the drinks reception drew to a close, the band’s music guided the transition toward dinner. Guests were invited to the dining area, where the next chapter of Clarisa and Salvador’s wedding — a night of al fresco dining, heartfelt speeches, and lively celebration — was about to begin.

Following the lively drinks reception, the Mariachi band led guests from the amphitheatre to the cortijo’s terrace dining area, their vibrant melodies setting a festive tone for the evening ahead. Guests followed eagerly, the air filled with laughter and anticipation as Clarisa and Salvador joined them, entering alongside their friends and family without formal announcements — letting the music and the moment speak for itself.

Tables were set with care, and glasses were filled with white and red wine, beer, Tinto de Verano, and soft drinks. The starter, a delicate shrimp carpaccio with avocado emulsion and herring caviar, was served, combining elegance with fresh, local flavours. While guests enjoyed the culinary delights, the couple slipped away briefly for pre-sunset portraits, capturing golden-hour light against the cortijo’s stunning architecture and rolling countryside.

After the Mariachi band concluded their set, local musician, Pablo, took over the music baton and provided a soft musical backdrop, allowing the conversations and laughter to flow naturally. As the sun set, the cortijo came alive with anticipation for the speeches and toasts that would follow. Glasses were topped with cava, and Clarisa and Salvador offered heartfelt thanks to their friends and family, sharing moments of emotion that reflected the love and care invested in every detail of their day.

The evening continued with the ceremonial cutting of the wedding cake, marking a sweet pause before the night fully unfolded into celebration.

Party & Evening Celebrations

As night fell over the Andalusian hills, the celebration transitioned smoothly from dinner to dancing. The open bar began, offering four hours of drinks while DJ Alex took over the sound system to keep the energy alive. The first dances were intimate and full of emotion: Clarisa and Salvador shared their first dance to Siempre Te Voy a Querer, followed by a father-daughter dance to My Girl and a son-mother dance to Amor De Madre — all moments captured beautifully by the videographer.

With the formalities complete, DJ Alex brought the party inside, keeping the dance floor alive with music and energy. Guests moved effortlessly between the terrace and interior spaces, enjoying late-night snacks as the night deepened. Music and laughter continued well past midnight, with every moment reflecting the blend of Spanish warmth and Mexican vibrancy that had defined the day.

As the evening drew to a close, guests departed by taxi, leaving behind the memories of a wedding that perfectly balanced tradition, intimacy, and joy — a day and night that Clarisa and Salvador, and everyone who celebrated with them, would remember forever.
