British Swimming Olympian Gets Married In Spain…

The best thing about being a destination wedding planner is that I get to meet some amazing couples from every walk of life, and Kate and Kevin were no exception.

Kate had previously been part of the British swim team at the London Olympics, and most recently at the Commonwealth Games, and when we met up at the Sunshine Weddings London office Kate and her fiance Kevin explained to us how they wanted a relaxed wedding with their closest friends and family. It was important for them to get all their nearest and dearest together in one place, and their guest list included some brilliant sporting guests such as gold medalist and OBE recipient, Rebecca Adlington

After our initial meeting in London, the couple met with the Sunshine Weddings Spain team in the pretty village of Mijas where we set about planning the wedding and finalizing all suppliers – including the wonderful photographer Jeremy Standley who captured their day so impeccably.

The celebrations began the night before the wedding in a modern style beach club in La Cala, Mijas Costa. Guests enjoyed drinks and food throughout the night, which gave everyone a great opportunity to meet each other before the big day.

The wedding day began early the next day (by Spanish standards) at 3pm, and guests arrived to the quaint Spanish villa venue by our shuttle service. Kate was a little nervous but all smiles in her slim-cut lace gown and her beautiful’rustic pink and cream wild bouquet, but as soon as she walked down the aisle there was nothing but teary eyes and large grins.

The garden ceremony was a pretty affair with large Balinese sun shades and guests surrounded by tall palm trees with the Andalucian mountains in the distance. After the service, guests followed the bride and groom to the shaded courtyard and enjoyed a variety of traditional Spanish canapes and tapas, including chorizo, prawns and Manchego cheese. Everyone also enjoyed much needed sangria and homemade lemonade, the perfect refreshing break on such a sunny day.

For the wedding meal guests were led to the garden where they sat looking out on the spectacular view and enjoyed a chicken or goat’s cheese salad starter, and either beef or sea bass for their second course – followed by the speeches and trio of desserts.

The night kicked off in true Spanish style with a great set performed by singer and DJ Kmiss, accompanied by a guitarist. Then once everyone was fully warmed up, Kmiss hit the decks and played into the early hours of the morning.

The entire celebration went swimmingly, an award winning wedding for a champion bride. May your future together be as golden and precious as an Olympic Gold medal, Kate and Kevin. Thanks for letting us be part of your wedding team!
