If you’re considering a destination wedding in Spain, the team at Sunshine Weddings Spain has over two decades of experinece to make sure your dream day is one to be remembered by all and on that magical day, apart from ideally having “something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue, a sixpence in your shoe,” a tradition based on an Old English rhyme that dates back to 19th-century Lancashire, it’s always exciting to think about the actual vows you plan on saying to your loved one that will see you united as husband and wife.

It is believed that the oldest traditional wedding vows can be traced back to Thomas Cranmer, the architect of English Protestantism (1549 and 1552), vows which are still commonly recited by many couples who choose to keep the tradition alive.

“I, _____, take you, _____, to be my wife/husband, to have and to hold, from this day forward, for better for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and in health, to love and cherish always.”

These traditional wedding vows are not in the Bible, though are based on biblical principles— according to Genesis 2:24, marriage is two becoming one—principles that can be tweaked to fit the couple’s style or completel re-written if needed and is the best place for you to add a personal and intimate touch to your wedding ceremony.

Many officiants have the couples recite vows the old-fashioned way but encourage them to say their own unique vows or a statement of love aftewards.

Bésame… (Kiss me…)

So why not include some simple Spanish phrases as part of your declaration of love such as: Mi amor (My love), Te adoro (I adore you), Te quiero (I love you), Bésame (kiss me), Si quiero (I do).

You could always inlcude the location into your wedding vows too, something on the lines of:

“Standing here, overlooking the shimmering Mediterranean Sea, I couldn’t think of a more perfect place to start the first day of the rest of our lives…”
“To the sound of a Spanish guitarist strumming the most beautiful of songs… I want to dance the rest of my life in your arms…”
From the beginning of our love story to now and for always…te quiero.
I promise to love you as much as we love tapas and vino…
You are to me what Jamon is to a Spaniard, treasured since forever and always will be…

If your dream is to get married in Spain, surrounded by dreamy landscapes, colours, beautiful beaches and mountains make the day even more memorial by adding a word or two in the beautiful Spanish language.
